Nestled on a sprawling rural property, this project presented a unique challenge as the client desired a cohesive design for both the house and large shed, departing from the conventional approach of separate structures. This vision inspired the creation of two wings, featuring similar materials and a matching gable roof form, united by a central walkway that serves as the focal point of the design. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the walkway also serves a functional purpose, with a circular opening in the brickwork blade wall providing access to both the walkway and the concealed courtyard space behind. Clever separation at each end of the blade wall, along with the roof above, lends an illusion of weightlessness to the structure, imparting a sense of lightness rather than solidity.

The modestly scaled home features bedrooms positioned at each end, while the open-plan kitchen and living area anchor the core. Mirrored windows throughout the home create a sense of transparency, offering views from one side to the other. An expansive alfresco area and landscaped fire pit activate the space between the home and shed, transforming it into a vibrant outdoor living area that extends beyond mere storage.

Sustainability Focus: Embracing sustainable design principles, the home boasts R6.0 ceiling insulation, R3.0 external wall insulation with increased wall thickness, and underslab and slab edge insulation throughout. A large rooftop solar array installed on the north-facing shed roof provides power to electric appliances, including hot water and air conditioning, further enhancing energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact.
